Karen Burns Photography Art Paint I'm originally from Michigan now living in Northern California halfway between Lake Tahoe and the city of San Francisco. We've landed in the perfect spot near the mountains, near the ocean, and near Napa Valley. I also draw a lot of inspiration from time spent at our cabin on Donner Lake. I have always had an insatiable curiosity about trying new ideas.
Over the years my photography style has evolved. I want to photograph every day things in unusual ways.
I am taking the time to slow down, to use manual focus, and really think about where I want to lead the viewer's eye. All of these things give a real connection with the story I want to tell, especially with images in the new Food Photography Gallery. There has been a camera in my hand for many years of travel, tasting, teaching and living. After being a devoted Canon girl for years I've made a switch to the Sony Mirrorless A7Rii. I love it for many reasons. The E Mount lenses I use are amazing.
Lensbaby lenses are also a part of my kit because they feed that curiosity enabling me to attend to the more subtle aspects, helping me to explore more options, and helping me come up with more original ways to present a subject. Getting as much information 'in camera' is important to me.
Lightroom and Photoshop are my post processing tools. The painted artworks you see on my website were digitally painted using Corel Painter software.
Master Painter Brushes
Many of these works are based on my photography and some are painted from a blank canvas. This is not a 'press a button' software.
I make all the decisions for color and brushes while painting each brush stroke with a stylus on my Wacom Cintiq. I also work in traditional oils which has helped me get a good feel for how the digital paints move on the digital canvas. Painted artworks are printed in my studio on Epson Exhibition Canvas with Ultra Chrome Pigment Inks.
Acrylic sealant and UV Protection are applied. Where appropriate, traditional paints and mediums are added to the surface to highlight areas and add more depth. Photographic images are printed on fine art papers. Pigment on Canvas prints are gallery wrapped and ready to hang.
Prints on fine art papers are rolled and shipped in tubes. I am co-founder of www.PhotoPaintWorks.com where we offer on-line workshops as well as destination workshops in Corel Painter, Photoshop, and Lightroom. 1h 49m 24s. Course Transcript - Painter's second generation Watercolor category encapsulates the physical modeling of the medium into a special watercolor layer. This layer models several key characteristics of watercolor like wetness, dry rate, evaporation, diffusion, the effects of gravity and so on. Let's take a look at the Watercolor category. So, to get to our watercolor layer, we're going to switch from Digital Watercolor to Watercolor, and I just want to give you a preview of this, so I'm going to draw and just show you how much more realistic this watercolor is, versus the earlier version. You can see now, you can get real-time running of the water, if the effects of gravity are enabled with the brush, which it is, for this particular one.
So, right away, you can see there's a big difference in this version of watercolor, versus the other. I also want to point out, notice that when I touched the canvas, I didn't paint on the canvas, that Watercolor Layer was created for me. So, the watercolor brushes are. Practice while you learn with exercise files.
